The captain of the AquaGenie, a bulk carrier stationed in waters off Karratha in WA, is the second crew member to test positive for COVID-19.

The captain has been taken off the ship and will be treated in Perth.

The vessel has been cleared to depart and will return to the Philippines under the steerage of its first mate.

The first member of the crew to fall ill was a male in his 50s, WA Premier Mark McGowan revealed on Monday.

He was tested on April 8 and returned a positive result the following day.

He was taken to Karratha Health Campus before being flown to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment in a dedicated isolation ward.
